COMMUTERS at Bolton Railway Station will notice a major change from Monday morning.

Northern Rail, which manages the station, will launch a new specialist gateline, which will require travellers to purchase tickets before heading for the platform.

Once purchased, commuters will be asked to put their tickets into the gates which will then open and allow passage through to the various platforms.

The changes mean that an entrance to the platforms from the car park will be closed off, so as not to allow users to avoid the new gatelines.

The technology, which is used at stations around the country, will be the fourth to be brought in by Northern since the start of its new franchise in April.

The ticket gates are part of a multi-million pound investment to modernise Northern’s network, helping improve security and encouraging all customers to hold a valid ticket before boarding.

The gates are made by Cubic Transportation Systems.
