THOUSANDS of pounds have been raised in memory of a popular Tottington Primary School teaching assistant.

Shirley Greenhalgh died in February this year aged 51 after a four year battle with cancer.

Following her death her husband Mark and children Charlotte, Joe and Sam along with Shirley’s brother Peter, organised a fundraising event at Greenmount Cricket Club.

The event was to raise money for Bury Hospice, hospice at home nurses who cared for Shirley during the last six months of her life so she could die at home.

Charlotte, who is a teacher at Edenfield Primary School, said: “The Hospice at Home nurses were like angels for us and made mum’s final days as smooth as possible which we needed, they put us and her at ease.

“Mum used to be a seamstress but she loved working with children and thoroughly enjoyed her job at Tottington Primary School.

“It was a good night to celebrate mum, with all the people she loved there, and we were delighted to raise such a big amount.”

The night raised £2,500 for the charity. Mark, who along with Joe, works at Cara Construction Ltd, said: “We cannot thank Bury Hospice enough for the compassionate and caring way they looked after Shirley in the final days and we were delighted our fundraising night was such a success.”
