A BOLTON woman has become the second member of her family to pass the age of 100 years old.

Gladys Tyldesley, of Teak Drive in Kearsley, received a surprise birthday party for her centenary on December 9.

Her elder sister, Annie, reached the age of 101 before she passed away six years ago.

Mrs Tyldesley is one of nine children to be born by Frank and Bertha Johnson.

The party to recognise the occasion took place on December 1 and was a total surprise to the centenarian .

Her eldest son, Ross, aged 72, helped organise the event.

He said: “It went very well, we managed to keep it a perfect surprise for her.

"She was overwhelmed, there were about 90 people at the actual event.

“We had entertainment on with a singer and a buffet.

"She enjoyed it very much.”

Throughout her life, Mrs Tyldesley, worked as a machinist in the garment trade, as well as working in the munitions factory during the war effort.

She was married to her husband Sidney in1943.

Mrs Tyldesley, along with her three sons, Ross, Max, aged 63 and Clive aged 60, were visited from many members of the extended family to celebrate her special birthday, from as far afield as Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Leicestershire and Merseyside.
