MORE complaints of fly-tipping have surfaced after a dirty mattress was dumped in an unadopted road.

A resident spotted the mattress, which was left in Back Glen Avenue near Haslam Park, Deane, along with some cushions and boxes.

According to Arnold Hood, who lives nearby in Glen Avenue, the issue has been ongoing for a number of years.

But he said the council initially refused to collect the waste as the road does not belong to the authority.

The 72-year-old said: “This is about the seventh or eighth time this has happened but the council won’t clean it up if it is not on a public road.

“I have been going to the council for years about fly-tipping in the area but you can see by looking around the town that it’s getting worse.”

But despite claiming it’s not responsible for the land, a spokesman from Bolton Council said it had removed the waste on this occasion.

The spokesman said: “We take the issue of fly-tipping in Bolton very seriously and always try to find out who is responsible.

“We also clean all adopted roads in the borough and remove waste on a regular schedule.

“However, we do not have responsibility for removing waste from unadopted roads such as Back Glen Avenue, as these remain the collective responsibility of the adjoining landowners to clean and maintain the road.

“In this case, we have moved the waste, but we would like to remind the house owners that it is their responsibility to maintain the road in the future or secure the area so fly-tipping cannot take place.”
