THIS wonderfully atmospheric photograph shows a Bolton long gone.
For many this picture will generate mixed emotions.
It is probably quite difficult to remember fondly the mill chimneys and smoke — these really are not something we would want to reproduce today.
But the buildings give us a glimpse back in time of an historic Bolton where industry was paramount and our heritage was proudly protected.
This panoramic view is taken from the School Hill eight-storey flats back in the middle of the 20th century.
It shows typical industrial revolution style properties in an area that was by then being demolished.
This view would soon disappear from the sky line forever to be replaced by a more modern and contemporary style Bolton — the one we see today.
Although we cannot remember with fondness the smog and smoke the mills certainly provided plenty of employment in Bolton and for that many families were grateful.
