SMOKERS are being urged to give up their habit by Bolton South-east MP Dr Brian Iddon as the ban on lighting up in public places edges nearer.

Dr Iddon was among MPs who voted for the ban which comes into force on Sunday and will make pubs, restaurants, offices, factories and shops smoke-free.

He said: "By giving up, smokers will not only be improving their own health, but also the health of those around them.

"Exposure to second hand smoke increases heart disease and lung cancer by around a quarter. Although some people disagree about the need for a ban the Government is trying to do its best to make the country healthier, by both banning smoking and ensuring that help is there for the smokers who wish to break the habit."

Information on giving up is available from local GPs, pharmacies and hospitals.

Help is also available from the NHS Smoking Helpline on freefone 0800 1690169, by visiting www.gosmokefree.co.uk, or by texting "GIVEUP" and your full postcode to 88088.
