A chemical explosion close to the M6 near Preston caused traffic chaos across the North-west network today.

Huge tailbacks on the M61 northbound developed from Bolton West services as a result, but traffic has now returned to normal on both motorways

Firefighters were called to Veolia Cleanaway at the Red Scar Industrial Estate in Ribbleton, just before rush hour on Monday after reports that chemical drums were exploding.

The unit backs on to the M6, which was closed between junctions 31 and 32 for some hours. Both carriageways have now re-opened.

A police spokeswoman said it was believed that a number of chemical drums were exploding at the site.

She added that people living nearby had been advised to stay indoors and keep their windows closed until further notice.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said 10 pumps were at the scene.

A fire service spokeswoman said: "Approximately 62,000 litres of flammable waste liquid is burning.

"Attempts are being made to protect a large single-storey building containing a vast number of cylinders."

There were no reported casualties at the scene, the fire brigade said.

A chemical support unit and two foam units were also being used by firefighters to try to douse the flames.

The waste management company, formerly known as Cleanaway UK, was bought by French firm Veolia Environment last year.

It is said to be one of the largest collectors of municipal, commercial, industrial and trade waste in England and Wales.
