SCHOOL leavers turned on the style at their prom nights.

Black ties, ball gowns, limousines and horse-drawn carriages were the order of the day as youngsters celebrated finishing their GCSEs.

About 200 pupils from Turton High School joined 55 staff at Rivington Barn to celebrate the end of their school careers, with a prize-giving, meal and disco.

Student achievement co-ordinator Paul Trainor said: "It was an outstanding event, they looked fantastic and put a lot of time and effort into their outfits.

"They were a great year group and a credit to the school."

Ninety Sharples School pupils, specially invited as a reward for their endeavours, joined 40 teachers to enjoy a buffet and disco at the Last Drop Hotel.

Head of Year 11 Lisa Baker said: "Pupils were rewarded for good attendance, smart uniform, behaviour and achievement.

"Staff voted for the pupils who had contributed most to the school over the last five years as prom king and queen and there were prizes of vouchers for the best-dressed pupils and best dancers."
