UNION officials say “nothing has been set in stone” over the proposed closure of a tissue factory in Horwich.

It has been revealed that more than 100 jobs are at risk at the Intertissue plant at Middlebrook, as parent company Sofidel announced plans to “streamline” its UK operations.

Under the proposals, the former Georgia Pacific factory could shut by March 2019.

Andrew Johnson, Unite regional officer said: “We are currently in the very early stages of consultation with the company over these proposals and at this stage nothing has been set in stone.

“There will be a lot of ground to cover over the coming weeks and we will be keeping the members appraised of all developments following consultation talks.

“Both the company and Unite will be providing support to all affected employees throughout this process.”

A final decision on the Mansell Way site is expected by the end of the month.
