A driver had a lucky escape after his car left a road at a notorious accident hotspot, flipped over several times and smashed into a stone wall.

The accident happened in heavy rain on a bend in Belmont Road between Abbey Village and Belmont as 23-year-old Chris Bingley travelled to Thornleigh Salesian College where he works as a PE teacher.

His silver Volkswagen ended up wrecked on its side in a field about 30 feet from the road following the smash at 7.20am today.

But the man, from Bamber Bridge, escaped with non life-threatening head and shoulder injuries and a black eye.

Firefighters stabilised the car, which was on a bank, before helping the man onto a spinal board.

Paramedics took him to the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Watch Commander Kev Barrow, of Bolton North Fire Station, said: "I don't know how he was still alive, he was very lucky because the car was a real mess.

"It's quite a notorious place for accidents and I would urge all drivers to take extra car and slow down near that bend, especially in the rain."

Both lanes in the road was closed alternately by police while the wreckage was cleared.

A 42-year-old Breightmet man had a lucky escape at almost the same location on Monday June 11 when his BMW ended up on its roof after swerving to avoid a Land Rover.

The Land Rover driver, who had fallen ill at the wheel, also escaped unhurt after his car came off the road about half a mile further down the road.
