IT is a shame that iron gates are having to be installed to prevent anti-social behaviour from taking place in Bolton alleyways.
The fact is, though, that something has to be done to stop gangs and drug dealers from congregating and using them to cause problems, including drug dealing.
When these alleyways were created it was with the intention of allowing residents to take shortcuts to each other's houses on different streets. Now their usage has changed irreversibly for the worse.
The residents would obviously prefer the alleyways to remain in their previous state, but this cannot happen and the next best option is the security that the iron gates will offer.
The council-funded gates, which will seal off the alleyways, will keep out the troublemakers - and give peace of mind to residents.
