THIS brightly-coloured shop sign has been uncovered while work is being carried out in Bolton town centre.

It has been discovered in Newport Street where shop fronts are currently being upgraded.

Its discovery was noted by Councillor Zoë Kirk-Robinson who put the picture on the popular Facebook site “I belong to bolton” asking: “With the work on Newport street at the moment, one of the shop fronts has been taken down and this is behind it. “Does anyone know what shop this sign was for?

“It’s from long before my time, that’s all I know.”

But it was not before the time of plenty of delighted group members who were happy to help Cllr Kirk-Robinson in her quest to discover what shop was once there.

It was a shop named Shades which was clearly well frequented by many young women in Bolton.

Jean Dalton comments: “I entered the Miss Personality competition at the Palais in the late 60s and my brother bought me an outfit from Shades to wear,.

“I didn’t win but thanks Tim anyway.”

The shop later became Chelsea Girl which many people also remember.

Janet Morris says: “Oh how I loved this shop.

“ Bought a dark brown fake fur collared, zipped jacket which made me feel so trendy and slim in 1973. “Felt like I was totally in touch with UK fashion and cutting edge design.”
