DOUBLE yellow lines could be laid on a road near a train station in an effort to fight parking problems.

Bolton Council has proposed to bring in the restrictions in Leigh Road to stop people leaving their cars near Daisy Hill Station.

The restrictions would go from Hydrangea Close up to around Industrial Street and parking would not be allowed at any time.

According to Cllr David Wilkinson, who sits on Westhoughton Town Council, said there had long been problems with people parking along the road and blocking footpaths.

He said: “When the Farnworth Tunnel was closed until last year, a lot of people started using Daisy Hill station and then never went back once it reopened.

“So we have ended up with a lot of people parking along Leigh Road.

“Drivers would block the entire footpath and parents with prams would have to go out into the road.

“I do support the idea and I think drivers do need to think a bit more but I do understand the problem with parking.”

He said more parking facilities were needed in the town as the number of housing applications in Westhoughton, which could mean thousands of houses being built if they are approved by Bolton Council.

A Bolton council spokesman said the issue was brought to the authority by Westhoughton with Chew Moor Area Forum. They added it would go before the cabinet member for environment, Cllr Nick Peel, in the near future and a decision would be made. The deadline for objections passed at the end of April.
