Commuters faced delays this morning after an engineering train derailed between Bolton Railway Station and Westhoughton.

The line has now been cleared and repaired, with services resuming as normal.

Journeys between Bolton and Wigan were affected, with trains between the two stations cancelled or diverted to Atherton throughout rush hour.

A replacement road transport was arranged to run between Bolton and Wigan Wallgate via Westhoughton.

National Rail reported that the incident happened at around 1.30am when an engineering train derailed during improvement works on the tracks three miles north of Bolton station at Lostock junction.

It was back on track at 2.50am, but there was damage to the points which Network Rail staff spent the morning fixing.

There were no reported injuries from the incident.
