CHILDREN at a Bolton primary school now have to call Miss Wright 'Mrs' after their headteacher married her sweetheart.

And the pupils at St Thomas’ in Halliwell, did not have far to walk to the ceremony — as the church is next door to the primary school.

Abigail Wright became Mrs Fielden when she married Lee on what was described as a ‘very special day’ witnessed by hundreds in the congregation.

And playing a big part in the ceremony was the school choir of about 20 children who sang “I swear’.

There was also another special guest — the Bishop of Middleton, the Rt Rev Mark Davies, who conducted the service assisted by St Thomas’s vicar Rev Roger Petch.

Mr Petch said: “It was a fantastic day. The Bishop and Abigail have known each other a while and she invited him to perform the ceremony.”

Miss Wright, aged 33, who is a former Rivington and Blackrod High School pupil, has been praised for transforming the school since her arrival five years ago from one that required some improvement to receiving a good with some ‘outstanding’ features at its most recent OFSTED inspection.

She was one of the country’s youngest headteachers when she was appointed.

Mary Holowaty, business manager at the school, said that the day could not have gone any better.

She said: “It was an absolutely perfect day for such a wonderful headteacher and she was a beautiful bride.

“It is unusual these days that a head gets married in a church that is attached to the school so it was great to see.”

She added: “Because we are such a diverse community in this area she has done a marvellous job bringing everyone together and we have gone from strength to strength since she took over.”

The bridegroom, Mr Fielden, aged 40, is originally from Darwen. He was also full of praise for his new wife. He said: “It was a fantastic ceremony with so many friends and family here so we want to thank them for that.

“Everybody around here knows about all the good work that Abigail has done for this community since she arrived and many people have come here to celebrate that today.”

And he was relieved that he actually made it to the wedding — he broke his leg on his stag party in Krakow a few weeks ago.

The couple will honeymoon in Tanzania. First port of call is Zanzibar before they go on a safari.

Lee added: “I have just had a pot removed. I may have been in a bit of trouble if I wasn’t able to make my own honeymoon!”
