DISABLED rail passengers would be worst-hit by plans to cut train guard jobs.
Sir David Crausby is calling for Northern Rail to drop plans for driver-only trains because of concerns over accessibility.
The Bolton North East MP is urging the Government to resist moves towards driver-only operation, which members of the RMT union are also fighting, as many people struggle to get on and off trains without the assistance of an on-board guard.
He said: “I have spoken to several local residents with disabilities who struggle to access our trains because there is no space for wheelchairs on an overcrowded carriage.
“I want to see improvements but the move to driver-only will be another setback, making life needlessly harder for Bolton’s commuters.
“If we want an accessible, welcoming, safe service then we need a guard on every train.”
Sir David has joined 21 other northern MPs in signing a motion calling for the government and Northern Rail to guarantee that guards’ positions will be retained.
