A 56-Year-Old woman had to be cut free from a car after a two-vehicle smash.

Firefighters were called to reports of a crash involving a silver Vauxhall Corsa and a black Mercedes in Church Avenue, Daubhill, at about 11.30pm last night.

The 50-year-old Mercedes driver, understood to be the passenger's sister, was able to free herself from vehicle.

But the nearside door had been 'crumpled' in the collision leaving her sibling trapped.

Firefighters cut away the roof of the car in order to rescue the woman, who complained of pain to her side.

It is understood she suffered a broken arm and hip in the crash.

She was taken to Royal Bolton Hospital by ambulance where it is understood she is still receiving car

The Mercedes driver and two men in their 30s, who were travelling in the Vauxhall, suffered minor injuries.

They were also taken to Royal Bolton Hospital.

A road sign and street side were damaged on Willis Street in the accident.

Debris, including glass, remain on Church Avenue this morning.

Watch manager Ian Read said the passenger was 'shaken up' by the incident

He added: "We had to cut the whole top of the roof off, we did a full extrication and brought her out of the top as the side was all smashed in.

"It was a tough car, luckily, anything else and it would have properly wiped her out."

Firefighters were at the scene for about  an hour.

Residents in the area say that the junction of Church Avenue, Willis Street and Ivy Street is an accident blackspot and have renewed calls for new measures to be taken.

One householder said vehicles crossing Church Avenue to get to Willis Street, from the direction of Ivy Street ,was particularly hazardous.

Faruk Patel, who lives in Willis Street, said: "We have a loof accidents in this locality, this is a blind spot area.

"We have to get the council to get the blind spot closed off because we have accidents here five or six times a year.

"They need to make it so that people can't come across from the side street (Ivy Street) opposite.

"They can't see what's coming up the road because there are a cars parked on the left."

His father, Yakub Patel, added: "It has happened many times here."
