COMMUTERS have welcomed the news that millions more young people will become eligible for cut-price rail travel .
Chancellor Philip Hammond announced proposals for a new discounted railcard for 26 to 30-year-olds in his Budget.
It is expected to operate on a similar basis to the existing 16-25 railcard.
George Jackson, aged 19, from Bolton, said that the new scheme was welcome.
He said: “It will make things a bit better, it makes it a lot easier.”
Frazer Carter, aged 54, from Salford, added: “I’m not of that age but if I were I would definitely use it as it’s cheaper and if I were 25 I would be happy that I could keep it for longer.”
The current railcard currently costs £30 a year and entitles the holder to a third off their train fare.
Steve Cooper, aged 65, from Bolton, said that the extension of the railcard scheme was a ‘good idea’ and will increase the use of public transport.
It is expected that the new card will launch in the spring.
