WOMAN will be featured in a Channel 4 programme in which teams attempt to build the longest model railway in the world.

Jenny Kirk, from Eldon Street, Tonge Moor, will make an appearance in The Biggest Little Railway In The World tomorrow.

She led one of the teams who took part in the world record challenge to create a 70-plus mile model railway track across Scotland.

The 38-year-old first heard about the idea in the summer of 2016.

She responded when show-makers Love Productions called for participants and she spent two weeks being filmed in the summer of 2017.

She said: "Something like this only comes along once in a lifetime and having the opportunity to be part of this, I would have hated myself if I did not get involved.

"It was the most fun you could have over two weeks.

"We filmed up in Scotland for two weeks and from the moment I got there I was trying to make the most of the Scottish summer.

"We were camping right along the route so we were getting the most authentic experience.

"We got a great sense of camaraderie because you are living and working with the group so we have all made friends for life."

She got made leader of D Team after an audition at the Love Production studios in London, which she described as more of a 'team-building' exercise.

The route of the railway went along the length of the Caledonian Canal going from Fort William to Inverness.

And Jenny, who is a model railway enthusiast, said there were a range of people from different backgrounds, including fellow enthusiasts and engineers from Network Rail.

She said: "My biggest thing is model railways. I do some writing for model railway magazines and I do some online blogs and Youtube videos.

"Over the last year I have built a lot of model railways so that is the kind of angle I came from.

"But there were engineers there and people with various backgrounds.

"We kind of knew what was coming and the train followed the Great Glen Way. The areas close to Ben Nevis were very challenging.

"It was a fantastic project and everyone really got into it."

She was tight-lipped on whether the team managed to complete the challenge but hoped the programme will make model railways more accessible to youngsters.

The first episode of the Biggest Little Railway In The World will air on Channel 4 tomorrow at 8pm.
