HOW do you describe the weather when it rains heavily? Is it “bucketing down” or it might be “raining cats and dogs?
Now, the Met Office is sensibly considering using regional slang in its local broadcasts to make them simpler and more accessible. For example, people in Leeds and Newcastle say it’s “chucking it down” while Londoners prefer to say it’s “caning it”.
It’s “mizzling” in Devon, Cornwall and Northumberland but “lashing it down” in Manchester although “pouring” was the most popular nationally. It would be interesting to hear what (clean) description Bolton residents use these days for rotten weather.
