THREE school teams will represent Bolton today at the Greater Manchester School Games gymnastics competition.

Two teams from St Brendan's RC and one from Claypool will compete at the Amaechi Centre in Manchester in a bid to become county primary school champions.

St Brendan's in Harwood won the Bolton School Games key step 1 (for Years 1 and 2) and key step 2 (Years 3 and 4) competitions with Horwich's Claypool becoming town champions in the key step 3 (Years 5 and 6) event.

The competition was supported by judges Pauline Slupski and Sue Archibald and Bolton Gymnastics Club who sponsored the event by providing medals and trophies.

More than 194 children took part in the Bolton Games gymnastics competitions from 14 primary schools – St Thomas of Canterbury, Sacred Heart, The Oaks, Clevelands, Blackrod, St Catherine's, St Brendan's, Prestolee, Claypool, Egerton, St Mary's, Pikes Lane, Markland Hill and Church Road.

The Bolton School Games also held an inclusive sports festival at the David Lloyd Bolton gym at which 60 pupils from Sharples High, Smithills High, Canon Slade, Rumworth, Birtenshaw, St Joseph's and Mount St Joseph all took part.

Competition took place in boccia, new age kurling, tennis and goal ball and the winners will also represent Bolton at the Greater Manchester School Games today at the Tennis Centre in Manchester.

Bolton School Games competitions are run by organisers Bernadette O'Hare, of Thornleigh Salesian College, and Brian Richardson, of St Joseph's RC High.

The Greater Manchester School Games opening ceremony will also have a Bolton presence with Chelsea Newbury and St James' High School's cheerleading squad selected by GreaterSport to perform.
