A FAMILY evacuated their home in Astley Bridge after a dishwasher fire started in the kitchen.
Two adults, a child and the family's dog escaped from the property in Thornham Drive when their Hotpoint machine burst into flames.
Fire crews were called to the blaze in the downstairs kitchen at 8.30pm last night (March 19). The family had been alerted by a smoke alarm.
Bolton North watch manager Michael Hodson said: "The machine, which was more than five years old, had been left switched on and it had set on fire.
"The occupant decided to get everyone out of the house.
"The fire created thick black smoke. It caused full damage to the dishwasher and to the surrounding kitchen units."
Fire crews used breathing apparatus and two engines to tackle the fire.
Mr Hodson urged residents to install a working smoke alarm and called for residents to avoid leaving appliances switched on overnight or while they are away from the property.
