CAR Share and Three Girls are both in contention for success at the upcoming BAFTA awards.

Sian Gibson has been nominated for female performance in a comedy programme for her role in the hit Peter Kay show.

BBC One drama Three Girls, which stars Bolton's Maxine Peake, has been nominated in the mini-series category.

The three-part series was based on the true stories of victims of grooming and sexual abuse in Rochdale.

As well as the nomination for best mini-series, Peake's co-stars Molly Windsor and Liv Hill have been nominated in the leading actress and supporting actress categories respectively.

The ceremony for the Virgin TV British Academy Television Awards will be held on Sunday, May 13 at the Royal Festival Hall in London and will be hosted by Sue Perkins.

Car Share has had success at the BAFTAs in the past and Peter Kay won best male performance in a comedy programme in 2016 and best scripted comedy the same year.

The show is also up for a Craft BAFTA, the awards celebrating the best in behind the scenes talent in television, for comedy writing and the winner of this award will be announced later this month.

Gibson will be up against Anna Maxwell Martin for her role in Motherland, Daisy May Cooper for This Country and Sharon Horgan for Catastrophe in the female comedy performance category.

Three Girls faces stiff competition for best mini-series from Howards End, The Moorside and The State.

The drama received strong reviews from critics and Peake was also praised for her powerful depiction of whistleblower Sara Rowbotham.

Three Girls' three nominations means it is the most nominated alongside Black Mirror, Line of Duty and The Crown.

The second series of Car Share was loved by critics and fans and everyone was left wanting more after the last episode.

Two special episodes will air in May, a series finale and an unscripted outing, but only after they have been shown at three charity showings in Blackpool.

These will be raising money for the Lily Foundation and will show two original episodes as well as the two new ones.

One charity showing was originally announced put two more were scheduled after exceptional demand.
