A LISTED former old people's home will be turned into nine apartments after plans were backed by councillors.

Haulgh Cottage, in Radcliffe Road, The Haulgh, closed earlier this year after being blacklisted by Bolton Council following an unannounced inspection.

The inspection team from the Commission for Social Care Inspection found some of the 39 residents sitting in stained clothes, while a lack of activities and a dirty kitchen were also criticised.

But the Grade II listed building was bought by Chorley-based Farr Horizon Developments, which has now been given the go-ahead to convert it into one and two bed apartments.

The external appearance of the building will be largely unaltered, although a single storey extension deemed "unattractive" in the council's planning report will be removed.

Tonge with the Haulgh ward member, Cllr Nick Peel, told the council's planning and highways committee: "This is a good way of revitalising an old building and it is vital for the character of the area that we keep it.

"Contrary to what people may say apartments are not always a bad thing.

"There's room for apartments in all parts of the borough and they will add to this area."

The building, which dates to 1836 was first used as a hotel and then a riding school, before being converted into a care home in 1984.
