FIREFIGHTERS have voiced their frustration at people tying up resources after they battled a 'deliberate' moorland blaze.

Flames spread across the grasslands near Rivington Pike on Sunday evening and smoke could be seen billowing from the area.

Crews from Horwich and Bolton North fire stations were dispatched and rushed to the scene, which was just off George's Lane in Horwich.

Jason Martin, crew manager at Horwich, said there were reports that the fire had been started deliberately "by youths".

He said: "The fire covered about 100 square metres of moorland and the wind carried it across the area, which can make it quite dangerous.

"We got out there with our beaters and leaf blowers and managed to put it out in about an hour.

"If we did not have the equipment and the specialist unit then it probably would have taken us about three hours."

As well as using the leaf blowers and beaters, Bolton North also brought its six-wheel vehicle, which made accessing the area of the fire easier for the crew members.

Mr Martin said: "It takes up more resources and things that might be needed elsewhere like at a house fire or a road traffic collision.

"It was just lucky we managed to deal with it quickly before we lost the light."

There have been a number of reports of fires in the area during the warm weather, with some caused by barbecues.

It has led to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service putting out a warning, urging people to take care.

And Mr Martin echoed that warning and particularly in Rivington where the grasslands are so dry at this time of year.

He said: "I would say enjoy Rivington because it is a beautiful place but just take care with cigarettes and when you are having barbecues.

"At this time of year, the dry weather means that fires can start off small but it can spread very quickly."

He urged people not to try and tackle the fire themselves but to call the fire service as soon as possible.
