ECO warriors from Eagley Junior School are waging a campaign against litter.

The environmentally-aware Year Five pupils collected rubbish which was littering the streets around their school – and managed to fill seven bags!

The project was prompted after a visit by retired headteacher Jane Holt, who gave a talk about the work she does with The Litter Pickers of North Bolton.

Inspired, children from the Chapeltown Road school’s two Year Five classes decided to take up the cause for a cross-curricular project.

Year Five teacher Sophie Barclay said: “It’s been absolutely fantastic. I’ve never seen them latch on to something so much.”

The children conducted an initial survey of the area, identifying the streets around Bromley Cross where most litter was found.

They then wrote pieces of persuasive writing, encouraging people to be more mindful about their litter. These texts were then typed-up by the children for display in Bromley Cross Library.

The anti-litter zeal also found its way into art and design classes where children painted pebbles to spread the message and hid them around the local area.

Miss Barclay said: “The children really feel they are making a difference and it’s something that we will hopefully be continuing in the school.”
