STEP back into the past and enjoy a traditional Victorian garden party.

St Paul's Church in Astley Bridge is staging its annual event next month and this year it is recreating the days when England was known as the land for garden parties to celebrate its 170th year.

Ivan Leigh, from the church, said: "This year it is the 170th anniversary of the consecration of the church in June 1848.

"The Parochial Church Council and our vicar, Rev Nick McKee are hoping that this year’s Garden Party will be a suitable occasion on which to celebrate the event."

Visitors can enjoy traditional summer games including hook a duck, tombola and enjoy the sounds of Eagley Band, Phoenix Knights of Harmony Barbers Shop Choir.

There will also be a beer tent, barbecue and plenty of stalls.

Funds raised through the day will help local groups and church groups.

Mr Leigh said: "As it is 170 years ago that the church was consecrated, we are hopeful that some of the stall holders may dress up in Victorian attire."

The garden party will take place at the church, in Holland Street, on June 23, 1pm to 4pm.
