A MAN who sought revenge on a son who had tried to protect his mother has been jailed for 28 months.

Jacob Thompson has been arguing with his former girlfriend at a party when Susan Giles stepped in to intervene.

And when her son Evan Giles tried to protect his mother from Thompson's anger, he was punched repeatedly and had his ear bitten.

Later Thompson, together with his sister, Juanita Taylor, and two others went round to Mrs Giles' home, where mother and son were both attacked.

Thompson, aged 22, of Pimlott Road, Hall i'th' Wood pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm, causing grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon.

Taylor, aged 43, of Greenway, Bolton, admitted causing actual bodily harm.

Nicholas Flanagan, prosecuting, told Bolton Crown Court how Mrs Giles and her son were at a house party in Pixmore Avenue on the night of April 9 2016 when Thompson arrived.

When Mrs Giles found him arguing in the kitchen with his ex-girlfriend, allegedly pulling her hair, she intervened and split them up.

"Evidently Jake was unhappy with the intervention," said Mr Flanagan, who added that Evan Giles tried to protect his mother from Thompson.

On the stairs he repeatedly punched Mr Giles in the face, chipping his teeth. The two men continued grappling with each other in the bathroom, falling into the bath where Thompson bit his ear.

Partygoers pulled Thompson away and Mr Giles and his mother went back to her flat in nearby Firwood Lane.

But, Mr Flanagan said, a few minutes later the Giles' heard footsteps and banging on the door before Thompson, armed with part of a metal walking stick, his sister, and two unknown men, burst into the flat.

Juanita Taylor armed herself with a piece of wood taken from the shattered door frame and attacked Mrs Giles, hitting her over the head and punching her.

Thompson attacked Evan Giles, repeatedly hitting him with the metal stick and knocking him unconscious.

Mother and son both suffered bruising and swelling while Evan Giles also sustained cartilage damage to his ear and muscle and tendon damage to his left arm and shoulder.

Thompson and Taylor were arrested the following day.

Daniel Calder, defending Thompson, said he has a "significant impairment of intelligence" as well as ADHD and had been drinking that night.

"The defendant acted in an inappropriate and violent manner," conceded Mr Calder.

"He reflects on what happened with shame."

Mark Friend, defending Taylor, stressed she had not been at the party but had acted in support of her brother.

"She had taken it upon herself to speak to Mrs Giles to ensure there would be no further confrontation," said Mr Friend, who added that she had not intended to harm anyone.

He said that the incident was a "very isolated and out of character event".

Sentencing Thompson to 28 months in prison, Judge Timothy Stead also imposed a restraining order banning him from contacting Evan and Susan Giles for five years.

Taylor is due to be sentenced today (Thursday) after the judge is given extra information about Taylors efforts to rid herself of drug addiction.
