A WOMAN is in a critical condition after she was knocked over by a heavy goods vehicle.

The pedestrian was at the roundabout at Watergate Lane and Salford Road in Over Hulton when the vehicle collided with her shortly after 1pm on Monday.

The woman, in her 20s, was taken to hospital where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

The driver of the HGV did not stop at the scene.

A section of Watergate Lane was closed southbound for about three hours while officers investigated at the scene and the air ambulance was in attendance.

PC Phil Shaw, from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a terrible collision involving a young woman who is currently very poorly as a result of her injuries.

“We have been trying to understand exactly what happened and our initial enquiries suggest that driver might not know he collided with a person but this is something we need to establish.

“If you were a driving a HGV and were using the roundabout around the time of the collision I would urge you to contact us.

“We need to get the full facts and understand the full circumstances.

“I would also appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision, or has dash-cam footage, to also get in touch.”

Anyone with any information should call police on 0161 4743 1016 or 101 quoting incident number 1016 of July 9.
