A BOLTON man has appeared in court after a 24-year-old cyclist was killed in a collision last year.

Vithal Visavadiya, aged 63, from Clunton Avenue, Daubhill, is charged with death by careless driving, following the incident on February 12, 2017.

Harry Sievey, 24, was cycling with another man when he fell from his bike and was lying on the ground in Mauldeth Road West, Fallowfield, when a vehicle driven by Mr Visavadiya hit him, a jury heard.

Judge Patrick Field, at Manchester Crown Court, in Crown Square, heard evidence from Alexander Squires, who saw the cyclist while walking through the area with his girlfriend on his way home.

Following questioning by Justin Hayhoe, prosecuting, Mr Squires said it had been a cold and dark evening, although he recalled some streetlights being on.

He saw the pair of cyclists travelling down the road and later reached the junction of Withington Road, where he saw one of the cyclists on the ground.

Mr Squires said: “The two cyclists were cycling in the middle of the road towards Mauldeth Road West. They were dressed in dark clothes.

“When I next saw them, one of them was already on the floor in the road, with the other hunched over.”

He added: “He was hunched over in the road, he was tending to the other man.”

He went on to say that he had seen a car approaching the two men in the road and had raised his arm and shouted ‘stop’ towards the driver, although the vehicle’s speed and direction did not change.

He said: “I heard a loudish noise and then I turned to see the car stopped, behind the car there was one male laying static.

“I couldn’t see the second male.”

Mr Squires said he then went over to the male who lay on the ground to check on him.

Another man then approached, who said he had previously been a lifeguard. The newcomer began to give the injured cyclist CPR, he said.

The trial continues.
