CONCERNS about pedestrians' safety have been raised after a 65-year-old man was killed as he was crossing the road in Topp Way on Saturday night.

The man, who has been named locally as Colin Olawumi, was using the pedestrian crossing near to the NCP car park at around 10pm when he was hit by a white Range Rover Sport.  Emergency services rushed to the scene but the man was pronounced dead.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving while uninsured and driving whilst over the drugs limit.    Today floral tributes were laid at the site, and tributes were paid on The Bolton News website.

Hoping4 peace wrote: “R.I.P. Colin, thoughts and condolences to his family.”

Martel commented: “What a tragedy, RIP Colin, top bloke x.”

And Skymondo added: “Omg so very sad god bless Colin you’ll never be forgotten! Hope he gets justice.”

The latest incident is second time in 10 months that a fatal collision has happened in Topp Way.

In October last year a 72-year-old man was killed in similar circumstances when he was hit by a green Volkswagen Passat as he crossed at a pedestrian crossing. The man was taken to Salford Royal Hospital by ambulance but was later pronounced dead.

Then on Sunday another car veered off Topp Way as it turned in from St George’s Road.

Following the latest fatality residents have voiced concerns about the dangers posed by drivers in Topp Way and other roads in the area.

John Brocklehurst, aged 62, who lives in nearby School Hill, said: “This is the second incident in 12 months. I’m definitely concerned about it because I walk across the road every day and 80 per cent of people don’t adhere to the speed limit.

“It’s an accident waiting to happen. People are sometimes driving at 60 miles an hour there doing really excessive speeds all the time.”

Mr Brocklehurst is now calling for an increased police presence around the area and an expanded effort to clamp down on people speeding or driving dangerously on Topp Way and neighbouring roads.

He said: “I would like to see a police presence and for the police to be there once in a blue moon doing a speed check.  “I have never seen a police presence there once, or seen them doing anything about the speeding.

“It just needs highlighting and for the police to do some something about it. And it does need addressing because there are kids that play in Davenport Street which is 20 yards away from there. It’s a concern for everyone."
