BOLTON'S nighttime economy was given a huge boost this week with news that a new £500,000 nightclub is set to open in Nelson Square.

It was followed by news microbrewery Northern Monkey is also set to open a new location, at the site of the La Piazza Cafe and Restaurant, next to The Pack Horse, also in Nelson Square later this month.

And last month we reported on the launch of the Electric Feel night at the Indie Hideout at Kahiki nightclub in Bradshawgate in a bid to revive the town's indie music scene.

So, this week's 'Bolton recommends...' is casting a light on some of the best live music venues in Bolton.

Albert Halls Bolton

Situated within the impressive town hall and having recently undergone a £6.5m revamp, live music venues don’t come much more impressive than this one.

Bolton’s brilliant all-round entertainment venue stands alone in terms of both its grandeur and ability to attract famous acts from across the country.

With its 670-seat theatre and function rooms set within Bolton’s famous Town Hall, it is of little surprise that sell out shows are commonplace, with several held each month.

Later this month to celebrate their return to the recently refurbished venue, BCMCS Musicals will present the smash hit musical Sister Act.

The Alma Inn

This iconic venue has held the fort as Bolton’s leading punk/metal venue for many years now.

The Alma Inn acts as a hub for local ‘metal heads’ and the traditional rock metal pub continues to go from strength to strength.

They host live music every Friday and from October will also be having live music on Sundays.

Well know metal bands such as DRI and Crazy Town have played there in the last couple of months and Headpee are scheduled to perform in November.

The venue caters for bands who are just starting out as well as more experienced performers.

The Man and Scythe

Ye Olde Man & Scythe is a well-known pub on Churchgate in Bolton Town Centre.

The earliest recorded mention of its name is in a charter from 1251, making it one of the ten oldest public houses in Britain and the oldest in Bolton.

It also happens to run live music shows both throughout the week and at weekends.

Fridays is usually acoustic night and on Saturdays they have a full band performing.

They try to put local acts on the bill and recently had Bolton band TVOD perform there.

In addition to this they host a jam night every 1st and 3rd week of the month and a ukulele night every 2nd and 4th week.

The Indie Hideout, Kahiki 2nd Floor

Bolton’s newest venue is the Indie Hideout on the 2nd Floor of Kahiki Nightclub on Bradshawgate in Bolton Town Centre.

This intimate venue has a capacity of around 80 people and only recently opened as it looks to fill the void that was left by the closure of local indie club Blind Tiger.

An up and coming venture there are a number of indie bands set to play the venue before Christmas and these are set to be announced by the Bolton News in the near future.

It currently runs on Saturday nights and is put on by Jordan Allen, lead singer of the renowned Bolton band of the same name, as well as former Blind Tiger DJs Russel Wood and Danny Broadhurst.

Horwich RMI

Horwich RMI is a social and railway club that is tied with the cricket and bowling clubs also on site.

They have two function rooms, the larger of which holds up to 250 people with the smaller one having a capacity of 120.

These rooms are available for booking and live music acts usually perform there once every other month.

There are some exciting performances in the pipeline with a UK Queen Halloween night set to take place on the 27th October, with tickets costing £10.

There is also a Take That tribute night scheduled for November and every Saturday night they hold a cabaret night with two artists and bingo.

Tickets for this cost just £2.
