A MAN remains in critical condition after a serious crash involving a coach carrying school children this morning.

The man, aged in his 30s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries after his vehicle collided with a school coach in Crompton Way at 8.10am.

The rush hour crash happened at the junction with Seymour Road, and involved a burgundy Vauxhall Astra and a green coach, transporting schoolchildren.

It is understood the coach hit the car on its driver side, sending the vehicle across the road and into a traffic island outside Toby Carvery.

The driver of the Vauxhall Astra was taken to Salford Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

The school children and coach driver were unharmed.

The Vauxhall Astra collided with a coach as it left the junction at Seymour Road.

It is understood the fire service had to remove the driver-side door to rescue the driver from the vehicle.

Severe delays ensued with motorists being turned away from Crompton Way, between Blackburn Road and Tonge Moor Road.

Seymour Road, between Blackburn Road and Crompton Way, was also closed to traffic.

Crompton Way and the adjoining roads were reopened at 1pm.

A Vauxhall Astra collided with a coach carrying school children on Crompton Way this morning.

A GMP spokesman said: "Police were called at 8.20am on Tuesday, September 11 to reports of a collision involving a coach and a car on Crompton Way, Astley Bridge.

"A man has gone to hospital where he remains in a serious condition."

The closure of Crompton Way, between Seymour Road and Green Way at Hall i' th' Wood, was still causing queues onto Blackburn Road, Tonge Moor Road, Bradshaw Brow, Turton Road, Bolton Road and Bradshaw Road at 12.30pm.

Two fire engines, a rapid response unit and four ambulances attended the accident scene.

A fire service spokesman said: "At 8.24am on Tuesday, September 11, two fire engines from Bolton North and Bolton Central, alongside the Technical Response Unit and Support Unit at Leigh, attended a road traffic collision in Crompton Way, Bolton.

"The incident involved a car and a coach carrying school children.

"One casualty was rescued from the car and taken to hospital by paramedics.

"Specialist firefighter trauma technicians and paramedics assessed all the children on board the coach as a precaution.

"There were no further injuries.

"Crews were in attendance for approximately one hour."

Eyewitnesses saw fire crews removing the door on the driver's side of the car in order to remove the man from his seat.

The coach was taking children to school when it collided with a car outside Toby Carvery in Crompton Way.

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said: "We got a call at 8.17 to Crompton Way.

"There were two cars involved and we have taken a male patient, aged in his 30s, to Salford Royal.

"The coach driver and passengers were uninjured."
