MEN dressed in balaclavas and carrying a machete robbed a Post Office in Tonge Moor.

Two men were seen at the Tonge Moor Road store on Tuesday, shortly before police raced to the scene.

Officers then cordoned off the building shortly after 3pm, while speaking to witnesses.

One eyewitness said they had seen the men running from the shop towards a large black car, parked in a side road which runs to Eldon Street.

She said: “As I was arriving on the street I saw a black four by four parked on the corner and the driver was sat in the front seat waiting.

“I first thought he was on his mobile but when I looked more closely he was trying to cover his face with a scarf.

“Then two men came running out of the shop and one of them was carrying what I think was a machete and the other one had a bag. They jumped into the car and the three men drove off together. After that the police came very quickly and secured the area and talked to people.

Another eyewitness said they had seen the black car “with its doors open” parked in the side street.

Adding: “Someone said they saw two men in balaclavas near the car.”

The incident occurred as parents were on their way to collect their children from nearby schools.

Police have confirmed that the incident was a robbery, although officers are still investigating.
