MORE than 100 people have received conditional job offers from Amazon as the number of people out of work continues its month on month decline.

As of the end of August there were 5,780 out of work benefit claimants in Bolton, 90 fewer than last month and upcoming seasonal work is expected is expected to further boost employment.

Penny Applegate, the partnership manager at Job Centre Plus, said: "In Bolton with Amazon we are pleased a lot of people have got jobs, we have had well over 100 people get conditional job offers with more in the pipeline and additional."

She added: "We're working towards seasonal vacancies, like with the Royal Mail.

"Sometimes Christmas jobs lead to permanent jobs and if it doesn't it improves earnings and can be a stepping stone."

An Amazon distribution site has been built on the Logistics North business park in Over Hulton offering 1,200 jobs.

As well as giant Amazon, the Job Centre Plus team has been working with a number of middling-sized businesses and Ms Applegate said there are vacancies at Genting Casino in Higher Bridge Street in the town centre and Keoghs Solicitors in Middlebrook.

Ms Applegate also highlighted opportunities for older people in caring roles.

She said Home Instead Senior Care were "keen" to take on older employees.

Ms Applegate said: "They are really keen to employ older workers because a lot of the people they work for are older and they often relate much better with older people. They will take on younger staff but they are very, very happy to take on older workers."

Among younger workers there has been a smaller month on month decline though but a larger six per drop from last year.

As at the end of August there are 1,170 people aged 18 to 24 out of work.

Nationally the Office for National Statistics has reported that the unemployment late has not been lower since the 1970s at four per cent, there are 1.15 million fewer unemployed people since 2010.

The ONS also reports that real-term par has increased for six month in a row.

Ms Applegate said wages in Bolton have improved because of the minimum wage going up this year to £7.83 for over 25s.
