THE toe-tapping musical 42nd Street will open Walmsley Church AODS' new season.

The multi-award winning society is stepping up to do produce the hit musical which, because it is a difficult show to present, is very rarely performed by amateur societies.

Director Nora Howcroft said: "One of showbusiness's most classic and beloved tales, ‘42nd Street’ tells the story of Peggy Sawyer, a talented young performer with stars in her eyes who gets her big break on Broadway. Peggy arrives in New York City from her hometown of Allentown, Pennsylvania, armed with her tap shoes and big dreams.

"Set during the 1930’s this show is just brimming with superb songs which although were written in that era are still as famous and popular today. Who hasn’t sung ‘42nd Street’, ‘Lullaby Of Broadway’ and ‘We’re In The Money’. In fact it would be hard not to know any of the famous songs in this show."

She added: "Not only are there great songs but the dance routines are extraordinary and choreographer Lara Syddall has brought out all the stops for this show with the whole company dancing, singing and doing some astonishing tap dancing."

Playing the principal roles are the talented Lindsay Farnworth as Peggy Sawyer, Vicki Wilson as Dorothy Brock and John Preston as Julian Marsh along say the production team "with an extremely capable and experienced company of actors, singers and dancers".

The musical director is Tim Power.

The society will continue to hit the high note over the coming months.

Nora said: "This society is also looking very much to the future and has chosen two fantastic shows for their 2019 season.

"The spring 2019 show will be a first in Bolton with the mad-cap crazy ‘Sugar - The Some Like It Hot Musical’. This of course was a film made famous by Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon.

"Following on in October/November will be that great favourite Christmas musical ‘Scrooge’ which was written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse."

Tickets for the show at The Parish Hall Theatre, Egerton, are available from ‘42nd Street’ from the box office Manager on 01204 305812 or TicketSource via the Walmsley website www.walmsleychurchaods.co.uk
