For years, Sir David Crausby has campaigned to make it mandatory for businesses to display their food hygiene ratings.

The Bolton North East MP said there's only a small percentage of food establishments have hygiene problems and noted that he has seen an improvement over the years.

However, he believes that all businesses in the UK should be required to display the green sticker they are given following a hygiene rating.

He said: “I think it would be very helpful if we could get some government legislation for people to display them on the door. As far as I’m concerned, if it’s clearly visible then people can see the standard of hygiene in that establishment.”

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said they were "delighted" that Sir David supports their plans to make it mandatory to display hygiene ratings in food outlets in England.

A spokesman said: "Mandatory display is good news for consumers and for businesses – it pushes up hygiene standards which keeps people safe."

The campaign has also received support from Bolton Council's Executive Member for Environment Cllr Nick Peel who said that mandatory display would give more power to customers.

The FSA are "hopeful" that legislation can be passed to introduce such a scheme and also want it to be applied where food is sold online.
