PLAYERS took to the pitch as rehearsals for one of football’s most remarkable stories kicked-off yesterday.

And next month fans can relive the 1923 FA Cup Final at the home of Bolton Wanderers – as the Octagon Theatre turns back the clock to one of The Trotters’ finest hours with And Did Those Feet.

Written by life-long Wanderers fans Les Smith and Martin Thomasson, the play follows the lives of two families in the build up to the 1923 FA Cup Final when Bolton Wanderers took on West Ham United in the first game to be held at the newly-built Wembley Stadium.

Excited fans spilled onto the pitch before the game and a policeman on a white horse called Billy famously helped restore order before the match began. Wanderers went on to win 2-0.

The Octagon’s former artistic director David Thacker is returning to the theatre to direct the play.

He said: “And Did Those Feet is a love story. It’s about a group of passionate Wanderers fans and their love of football.

"I’m sure those who have seen the previous production will enjoy seeing the play performed overlooking the stadium. For those who have never seen it, I hope this setting will give the play a wonderful atmosphere.”

Characters in the play include a couple whose wedding plans clash with the big day, a footballer lost in the war and Bob Stott – who walks 212 miles from Bolton to Wembley in ribbons and clogs.

Martin said: "“To put it in football terms: our manager, director, David Thacker, has put together a great team; our players — the cast — will give 110 per cent for the full 90 minutes and we’ve no doubt that, when the final whistle blows, our lads and lasse) will be lifting that trophy. ”

Les added: "Seeing the play performed at the stadium where we have lost and won so many games is going to be quite special. It’s a great opportunity Bolton Wanderers fans to come and see the Wanderers win the FA Cup 12 times in less than a fortnight.”

And Did Those Feet will be staged at the Lion of Vienna Suite from Sunday, October 21 to Thursday, November 1 with matinee performances on Wednesday, October 24 and Sunday, October 28.
