ONGOING problems at a Little Lever building site reached a peak yesterday when a mother blocked excavators.

The machines were part of works to lay sewage pipes beneath Park Road, leading to the site of a new 25-home development.

However, Denise Williams says the noise and vibrations caused by the work would have further frustrated her son Alex Austin, 30, who suffered severe brain damage after a car accident when he was 16.

In addition, there has been damage to the house, leading to the ceiling in the porch collapsing, which Mrs Williams puts down to the work after having a survey.

After blocking the work and consulting with local councillor Sean Hornby at her home and representatives of building giant Galliford Try, Mrs Williams agreed to allow the roadworks to continue until Thursday, when her son returns from staying with his carer.

She said: “I am trying to be as reasonable as I possibly can. I can accept the damage to the house if it gets sorted afterwards but I want a legal document that says they will fix it. I can’t pay to get that porch roof put up and it’s an accident waiting to happen.”

Cllr Hornby added: “I think the main issue with her experience is there has not been any proper communication apart from the odd letter. We had a public meeting 18 months ago and if they had taken on-board residents concerns the whole development would have been a lot easier.”

Galliford Try have previously apologised "in advance" for any the disruption caused and are expected to speak with Mrs Williams before Thursday.
