MODEL Christine McGuinness told how she cried when she overheard someone complaining about her children, who have autism, in a play centre.

Christine, who is married to Bolton comedian Paddy McGuinness, appeared on ITV's Loose Women to talk about her support for Autism Hour next month.

She spoke about the joy and challenges she experiences in raising her five-years-old twins Leo and Penelope — and the need for people who point and stare to understand the condition.

Christine said that years ago her children would not have been able to cope with a play centre, "holding their ears" and asking to go home, but now they are excited about the centres.

She said going to be a play centre is a big thing for her twins.

"Now they are at a age where they are enjoying it, and I want them to go," said Christine,"They get really excited and when they get really excited they may flap their hands or jump up or down and make a lot of noise.

"I overheard a lady complaining about the sounds they were making, saying she couldn't stand it and it was hurting her ears.

"I cried. She said there must be something wrong with them."

Christine said that her children should be able to enjoy the same activities as other children.

Christine, who also has a two-year-old daughter Felicity, said she was passionate about raising awareness of autism.

"I do not think my children need fixing, they are completely amazing how they are.

"They are so intelligent, they are fun, they are loving, they care. They do not feel they are different. I feel blessed they are mine."

Autism Hour takes place on October 6 when businesses and shops are asked to turn down music and other noise to make the area more accessible for those with autism.
