A GROUP of concerned residents met with councillors this week to discuss controversial plans to turn a former dental surgery into an eight-bed home.

The proposals would see the building, in Bolton Road, Farnworth, become a house of multiple occupancy (HMO) a contentious form of housing that some argue would cause strain on parking and local amenities, and could contribute to anti-social behaviour.

More than 30 residents attended the meeting, held on Saturday at the Devon Street Scout Hut, to speak to ward councillors Maureen Flitcroft and Paul Sanders.

The meeting also involved members of the Friends of Moses Gate group, including Jim Clarke, who pointed to the three parking spaces outlined in the planning application, saying that an eight-bed home would likely need more space that this.

In addition, the group released a statement, which said: "With the HMO on Bolton Road, there are already considerable issues with parking and these properties have only three spaces so these issues are only going to get worse.

"Also, this type of development is going to increase the potential of anti-social behaviour, as the area is already very overcrowded and it will add more nuisance and disturbance to surrounding properties.

"The group thinks this is an inappropriate development for this area."

This application is the latest in a string of applications for HMO conversions in Farnworth, including one in Park Street which was recently refused by Bolton Council’s planning committee.

Following the meeting, Cllr Flitcroft, who represents Farnworth and Kearsley First, said it was "great" to see people coming to the councillors to express concerns.

She added: “We recognise the need for additional housing but have deep reservations about the nature of some of the developments especially those that overburden our infrastructure and have a negative impact on the community.”

The application has also received heavy criticism from Farnworth Labour councillor Jean Gillies, who has said she is "completely opposed" to HMOs in the town.
