THE family of a woman who died after falling down cellar steps were horrified to discover the pub she died in could be nominated for a national award.

Elaine Horrocks was 54 when she died after falling through the unlocked cellar door and down the steps in the Rosehill Tavern, Leigh Road in Westhoughton.

Her family discovered on Facebook this week that the pub was one of five in the constituency which could be nominated for the Parliamentary Pub of the Year award.

Mrs Horrocks sister, Vanita Fairhurst said: "She died there in January and it could be pub of the year! We're pretty disgusted about it."

Mrs Fairhurst was also concerned that Bolton Council's health and safety investigation into Mrs Horrocks death was still ongoing.

Peter Horrocks, Elaine's husband, said: "It's a smack in the face. This investigation is not finished yet. If that door had been locked Elaine would still be here now."

The competition allows MPs to nominate a pub in their constituency for the pub of the year competition. Like many MPs, Chris Green, MP for Bolton West , gave his constituents the opportunity to take part asking for nominations, the Rosehill Tavern was one of five which made the shortlist and Mr Green asked people to vote on their favourite.

Mr Horrocks and Mrs Fairhurst met with Mr Green about the matter and were disappointed that he would not remove the pub from the shortlist.

Mr Green declined to comment.

The pub also declined to comment on the matter.
