HOW do you fancy quaffing a pint of pork pie pale ale, black pudding stout, or fish and chip bitter?

These brews are some of the nutty suggestions made to a brewery which is inviting people to design their own beer.

Horwich-based Blackedge Brewing Company has launched a competition asking beer lovers to offer their ideas for a new product.

Brewery founders Shaun Reynolds and Wayne Roper are challenging entrants to come up with as many flavours as possible, which they will then attempt to replicate — or at least give it a “bloody good try”.

The pair have, however, added a caveat that the suggestions must be for a commercial sellable beer — so ideas such as donner kebab and chilli con carne will not be considered.

Mr Roper said: “This competition is all about getting a bit of engagement with our customers and is something that we thought of doing for a while.

“It can be absolutely anything, but it does have to be something that we will be able to sell to landlord.

“Try to get creative and come up with something that has not been done before. We want something that is unique and something that will challenge us.”

When all suggestions submitted have been compiled, the top ten, as considered by the brewery, will then be put to a public vote.

The ultimate winner will then be brewed at the Moreton Mill brewery, with the people who initially suggested the flavour being invited to help in the brewing process — and no doubt enjoy a couple of delicious beers throughout the day.

Mr Roper said: “The winners will be given a full brewing experience. There will be heavy work involved as there is in brewing, but it should be a bit of fun.”

Blackedge Brewery was founded in 2011 as the boozy brainchild of Mr Roper and Mr Reynolds, who share an unquenchable passion for good beer.

The small, independent micro-brewery’s name is combination of the pair’s respective homes of Blackrod and Edgworth.

Since its inception Blackedge has grown to become a multi-award winning brewer, churning out bottles, kegs and casks, including their signature porter, which was named CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain in 2017.

The closing date for suggestions is October 5 and the winner will be announced on October 12.
