FLIGHTS had to abort their landings at Manchester Airport due to strong winds and heavy rain caused by Storm Callum.

Some of the aeroplane landings looked a little less than perfect as pilots battled against the elements.

A Ryanair flight from Rome and a Jet2 flight from Mahon had to abort their landings and initiate a go-around on Saturday due to the strong winds and wet weather as they lined up for their approach.

The video was taken by YouTuber AviationUpclose, who captured multiple windy landings.

Bolton photographer Phil Taylor has captured several dramatic photographs of the planes getting into a pickle.

Mr Taylor said: "One of the Flybe planes looked as though it was about to wallow into the runway.

"There were a couple of planes who approached and decided to initiate a go-around. They were not having any of it."

A Flybe plane is pictured at an awkward angle just over the runway while huge amounts of water was seen spraying into the air as Vueling, Etihad and Ryanair planes came to land.

But the pilots managed to bring each of the aircrafts down safely.

Planes are still taking off at Manchester, although there have been cancellations due to safety issues at other airports.

The gales reached more than 40mph in the area, according to the MET Office.
