IT’S broken box office records and now audiences can enjoy “All that Jazz” right here.

Adlington Music and Arts Society is bringing the smash hit musical Chicago to the stage.

Joe Simmons from the theatre company said: “Ever willing, determined even, to take on a challenge, Adlington Music and Arts Society have played a little safer this time by choosing a show which must rank amongst the best and most glittering of anything produced in the last 40 odd years. Just try to utter the three words “All that jazz” without feeling the slightest twitch in your feet - I defy you!

“Chicago is the show that has broken all sorts of box office records and is still being performed internationally on the professional stage. But at ticket prices that AMAS would never dream of asking! From the opening scene, this show simply crackles with sensuous and provocative movement as performed by the inmates of Cook County Jail in “Cell Block Tango” - little left to the imagination but magical nevertheless.”

Set in 1920s Chicago the two chief protagonists - Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly - are based on real-life characters from the 1920s.

These ladies became known as ‘celebrity criminals’.

The original choreography was created by Bob Fosse, Choreography for AMAS is being created by Heather Hodgson, who is described as both inventive and charming”.

Dave Dossett is the musical director who is ensuring that rehearsals are going with a swing and “guaranteed to get the best out of his charges”.

The whole production is co-ordinated by experienced director, Jackie Creer, who couldn’t wait to get her hands on one of her all-time favourite shows

Joe explained: “AMAS were so excited when obtaining the rights to perform this show that members are still pinching themselves at the very thought of bringing it to reality. We first tried to acquire the rights over 20 years ago, having seen a production in Ormskirk, but a revival in the West End scuppered things until most recently when its limited availability to amateurs became known and immediately we applied, to the extent of abandoning our plans for a different show. Being the first amateurs in this area to present ‘Chicago’, interest was so keen as soon as audition details were announced and from more than 50 auditionees, the final cast numbers were whittled down to the finest in the area.”

The production’s main sponsor is The Retreat Restaurant, Church Street, Adlington, who have concocted a pre-show dinner or a “Razzle Dazzle” cocktail - an offer that cannot possibly be refused!

Chicago runs from October 23 to 27 at Adlington Community Centre in Railway Road. It starts at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £12.00. Concessions Tuesday only are £10.00.
