A crime scene has been set up at a flat near Bury town centre following a fire yesterday afternoon.
Two men were taken to hospital after a fire broke out in the living room of a ground floor flat at Peel Lodge.
One man who was visiting a different apartment smashed a window in an effort to rescue the occupant.
The fire service attended the incident in Castlecroft Road around 5:50pm yesterday and rescued the man.
Bury Fire Station watch manager Steve Urmston said that the flat was not greatly affected by the small fire but both men were taken to hospital.
He said: "When we got there, one gentleman had tried to rescue another gentleman from the flat. A team of two went in with a hose reel and rescued one casualty.
"The gentleman was then taken to Fairfield Hospital via ambulance. He received treatment and went away conscious and breathing.
"There was a gentleman who was visiting Peel Lodge who tried to rescue him. He was taken to hospital via ambulance for a laceration to his hand and for smoke inhalation."
