WORK on a new railway to connect the major Northern cities might begin as soon as 2020 as leaders prepare plans to put before the government.
Northern Powerhouse Rail, or HS3, would provide high-speed rail links between Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield.
Bolton would be connected to the system through its links to Manchester Piccadilly, where nearly a million more people would be within 90 minutes travel of the city.
Tim Wood, Transport for the North’s Director for Northern Powerhouse Rail, said: “Northern Powerhouse Rail is a bold and ambitious plan that will deliver transformational rail improvement at a scale witnessed only once in a lifetime. For the north to thrive and grow we need better and more seamless rail connections across the North and to the rest of the UK.”
The rail line would also integrate with a completed HS2, with some new tracks built and other sections upgraded to take on faster trains.
The true cost of the project has not yet been decided but it would be a multi-billion pound scheme.
