IT has received standing ovations and now the heartwarming show Pack-up Your Troubles commemorating 100 years since the end of the end of World War One is heading for Bolton.

Featuring the songs It's A Long Way to Tipperary, Keep the Home First Burning, If Your Were The Only Girl in the World, Take Me Back to Dear Old Blightly and of course the title song will be performed in the production honouring the brave war heroes.

The story is based around five characters, Fred, the pub landlord, Winnie the ageing spinster who loves a man in uniform, Edna, a worried mum, Jack her young soldier son, Walter, a loveable but miserable "old so and so" plus the local vicar who are all in The Bull and Bush Pub, having a "wee drop" to help through the horrors of the war, when Sgt Major Gibbins delivers the news the Great War is over.

The characters rejoice with a part with each character performing a party piece.

Director of Paper Moon Theatre Company Jan Hunt said: "The stage gives way to songs of the period magic and emotion as Edna’s son Jack returns home — they are mother and son in real life too.

"In Act 2, the concert party doesn’t turn up so we have to perform the melodrama on their behalf with Winnie playing the young village maiden.

"Fred playing the villain and Edna playing the village idiot.

"It all goes a bit pear shaped but is very funny. The show ends with a great medley of war songs culminating in a very patriotic, flag waving finale."

She added: "The show opened at The Pomegranate in Chesterfield, we then went to The New Theatre Wimbledon and last Sunday at The Buxton Opera House. The show is being so well received and we have enjoyed a standing ovation at each performance so far!! The tour continues until end of November."

All the artistes have appeared on BBC’S longest running series, The Good Old Days and Jan is now the associate producer for the stage version of the show at The City Varieties in Leeds where the TV show was always recorded.

The theatre specialises in traditional Victorian Music Hall with the hugely successful The Magnificent Music Hall productions, and bringing popular TV sitcoms to the stage such as Birds of a Feather — with the original cast — Dinnerladies and Rising Damp.

Pack Up Your Troubles was Jan's idea and develop by David Graham, who plays Fred in the production.

Jan said: "Audiences can expect an afternoon of pure heartfelt and professional entertainment — 30 great songs such as Pack Up Your Troubles, Long Way To Tipperary, There’ll Aenlways Be An England, Keep The Homefires Burning, Roll Out The Barrel, Boiled Beef and Carrots Knees Up Mother Brown. Take Me Back To Dear Old Blighty, Whizz Bang, Bless ‘em All, I Wonder Who’s Kissing Her Now. Land of Hope and Glory."

She added: "I want to send the audiences out having experienced two hours of true entertainment which has paid great respect, honour, love and remembrance to those brave men and women who gave of their lives during the ‘Great War’ to give us the lives we have today."

The production shows on Tuesday, October 30 at 2:30pm at the Albert Halls Theatre, Bolton.
