A multiple vehicle collision caused the M62 to close between Simister Island and Heywood this afternoon.

Up to six vehicles may have been involved in the crash but it is understood that no one is injured.

Police were called at around 3pm and stopped traffic eastbound between junctions 18 and 19.

One lane remained closed until 4.55pm but has now reopened.

Traffic is still slow due to recovery work following the accident.

There is also congestion on the M60 at junction 15 for the M61 at the Swinton interchange.

Cameras showed that vehicles were re-positioned into lane one of four and all debris has been cleared.

Highways and fire services are on the scene assisting with the vehicles.

Traffic is queueing from junction 18 and there is slow traffic across the region due to drivers trying to avoid the M62.
