BOLTON West MP Chris Green in one of 84 Tory MPs whose majority is smaller than the number of their constituents due to be moved on to Universal Credit, the Labour Party has claimed.

Many residents in Bolton are due to be moved on to the programme next month, which will see nearly three million people change from their "old-style" benefits" nationally.

Julie Hilling, Labour's Parliamentary candidate for Bolton West has now called on Mr Green to oppose the move.

She said: “It’s no surprise that the Tories have been thrown into disarray over Universal Credit. Politicians can’t cause this much human suffering and not expect a backlash.

"Chris Green should stand up against this roll out before it is too late."

The announcement also follows Labour Party analysis showing that 65 per cent of Universal Credit sanctions in the North West have landed on people under 30.

More than 76,400 sanctions out of a total of 117,503 have hit claimants under 30 — including 16,000 for people aged 18 and 19.

Ms Hilling said the Conservatives have "no excuse for pushing ahead with their shameful and ideological programme", adding: “This failed Government programme is going to leave the poorest families, including half of single parents, £200 a month worse off."
